Comedy is one of my favorite genres in all of film. I consider myself a bit of a comedian, regardless of what other people will tell you. Comedy is like horror, it is pretty easy to make but very difficult to make well [I'm looking at you, Epic Movie]. There are so many types of comedy from fart jokes to sardonic monologues and beyond. I have compiled a list of my favorite 15 comedy movies of all time. Feel free to read and comment to your heart's [or lung's] content.
Here are numbers 15 through 13:
15. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
This movie is right up my alley. It is sarcastic, hilarious, and about music. This is by far my favorite "Rockumentary." This film is such a great satire of the music industry and the early 1980s. The members of Spinal Tap actually play their instruments, which is awesome. The soundtrack, written and performed by these men, is hilarious with songs such as "Lick My Love Pump," "Sex Farm," and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight." The actors in this movie have actually performed as Spinal Tap at times and many elements of this movie are still around today. "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" has made appearances in the Guitar Hero franchise.
Why you would like it: This movie is pure brilliance. Some of the antics of the performers and stagehands are almost to a Three Stooges level. The scenes and dialogue seem so simple yet they say so much at the same time. That is why this movie is brilliant. If you like mockumentaries or 80s music at all, this movie is for you. Just watch:
Why you might not like it: If you don't have a sense of humor, then you might not like this movie. Also Fran Drescher makes an appearance.
14. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
This movie satires all zombie movies while simultaneously being an excellent zombie movie. I have seen this movie probably 40 or 50 times and I love it every time. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost make an amazing comedy duo [they are quite good here as well]. It follows the same plot of almost every zombie movie - everything is normal, something seems wrong, no one knows what is happening, DESTROY THE BRAIN, fight your way to safety, your safety is surrounded, escape at the cost of losing some team members, resolution. Judging by these first two movies on this list, I suppose I am a sucker for English sarcasm.
Why you would like it: If you are a sucker for English sarcasm, then you would enjoy this movie. The violence and gore is just enough to be enjoyable while not being unsettling. There are so many subtle elements to the dialogue that I hear new things every time I see this movie. By the way, you've got red on you.
Why you might not like it: There is some violence and language. However, if you don't like violence and language then go fuck yourself I hope you get hit in the face with an ancient battleaxe.
13. The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)
Judd Apatow often has solid gold creations. This movie is no exception. It is one of the better performances of Steve Carell's career. The premise of this movie is quite humorous, considering Andy [Carell] is a 40 year old virgin as the title suggests and his coworkers and friends want him to get laid. Even when he does find love, he ironically is involved in a sexless relationship. Steve Carell's character is a great combination of quirky and just so unfortunate that this movie provides many, many laughs.
Why you would like it: Any Apatow fan would enjoy this film, which includes appearances from Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill. There are so many funny characters and classic lines that this movie is just pure comedy. Lines such as "You know what? I respect women! I love women! I respect them so much that I completely stay away from them!" really are what make this movie so funny to me. Oh, and it is is often awkward which I love. Example:
Why you might not like it: If you are an actual 40 year old virgin, this film may not be for you. Otherwise it is great for anyone who can stand the overwhelming awkwardness coming from Andy throughout the movie.
Great stuff, Carter! I'm interested to see what 14 movies you have above Spinal Tap, I'm not sure I can think of that many, but you are the comedy expert of the two of us...
